Washington School is a small elementary school that contains four special education programs.  Our programs serve children ages three through eight years of age.  Washington School consists of two half-day preschool disabled classes, a Language and/or Learning Disabilities (LLD) Primary class, a full-day preschool disabled class for students who fall on the Autistic Spectrum or who have Autistic tendencies, and a multiply disabled program.

The two half-day preschool disabled classes focus on growth-enhancing experiences structured around environmentally meaningful stimuli.  Developmentally appropriate activities within a structured environment facilitate the growth of our students.  Occupational, physical and speech language therapies are provide in accordance with each student’s IEP.  Behavioral intervention strategies are utilized.  The children interact in various activities with their typical peers from the CommunitySchool which is located on the same campus.  Activities included story-time, crafts, and gym activities.

Children enrolled in the LLD Primary class are provided a structured academic setting which stresses emerging pre-readiness academic skills and improve behavioral management skills.  The students participate in specials at
Helen I.Smith Elementary School and Franklin School. The students receive related services as indicated in their respective Individual Education Programs.  These include speech, occupational, and/or physical therapies.

Our full-day preschool disabled class for students who fall on the Autistic Spectrum or who have Autistic tendencies is modeled in the methodologies and philosophy of applied behavioral analysis.  All of the students engage in applied behavioral analysis programs within the classroom setting.  The focus of the class is to prepare these youngsters for transition into the elementary programs within the district.  All students receive related services as per each student’s IEP.  The children interact in various activities with their typical peers from the CommunitySchool which is located on the same campus.  Activities included story-time, crafts, and gym activities.

Children enrolled in the Multiply Disabled class are provided structured academic setting which stresses academic skills as well as life skills.  The students participate in specials at Helen I.
