About Smith School

The Helen I. Smith Elementary School is named after the school’s first principal.   If you walk through our front hallway, you will see her picture displayed near the main entrance.  One of three K-6 grade elementary schools in Saddle Brook, the Helen I. Smith School is the largest of the three schools.   Currently there are two of each grade, and one triple class.   We also have within our school the self contained Special Education classes for the elementary students in the district.   The Visions Program, which is part of Bergen County Special Services, utilizes two classrooms and is part of our school community.

Upon entering our school you will notice at atmosphere that fosters creativity, independent thinking and learning through inquiry and discovery.    Our teachers are collaborative and nurturing.  Students often work in multi grade settings, such as Reading Pals, which promotes responsibility for our older students in the friendship and education of the younger ones.

Our chorus program begins in grade 3.   Students in chorus meet before school once a week with our chorus director.   Students may join the band in grade 4, which also meets once a week before school for rehearsals.

Throughout the year we hold various events, activities and contests that make our school special to us.   Smith School traditions include calendar and photography contests, spelling bees, Kindergarten bingo night, a Read-a-thon, the Curriculum Fair, Field Day and many more.
